Global Computing Consortium's High-Performance Computing Development Group Successfully Held the First Assembly

On February 28, 2025, the first general assembly of the High-Performance Computing Development Group (HPC DG) of the Global Computing Consortium (GCC) was successfully held in Shenzhen. This assembly marks the official establishment of the HPC DG. It aims to facilitate global collaboration and technological innovation in the HPC industry and promote the prosperity of the global computing ecosystem. Representatives of 24 sponsors from academia, industry, and research institutes gathered to witness this moment.

Industry Vision: Gathering Global Talents for HPC Industry Development

At the beginning of the conference,Academician Qian Depei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered a speech. In his speech, Academician Qian reviewed the development of HPC and emphasized its important role in scientific research, industrial manufacturing, and society. He also pointed out that current HPC industry faces great opportunities and challenges, and the establishment of the HPC DG is just in time to gather global industry chain resources and promote international cooperation. Therefore, he called on all parties to fully utilize this platform, strengthen the integration of production, education, research, and application, accelerate technological innovation and achievement transformation, and promote the in-depth application of HPC in industries.

Lu Yutong, director of the Guangzhou and Shenzhen Supercomputing Center, emphasized in her speech that the HPC DG should focus on four directions: technological breakthroughs, ecosystem construction, global collaboration, and talent cultivation. She highlighted the need to promote the industrialization of cutting-edge HPC technologies and strengthen cooperation with international supercomputing institutions to jointly build a global pool of HPC resources and applications. She also stated that the Guangzhou and Shenzhen supercomputing centers will continue to contribute to the HPC DG, serving as an accelerator for technology transformation, a pioneer for international cooperation, and a "responder" for talent cultivation.

Peng Peng, Secretary-General of the GCC, read out the resolution of the GCC Council on the establishment of HPC DG. He stated that the establishment of the HPC DG is an important step for GCC to promote the deep integration of industry, academia, research, and application in the field of high-performance computing, which is currently a core driver behind technological revolution and industrial transformation. HPC DG will help build an open and collaborative platform for the global HPC industry to facilitate the construction of Arm-based supercomputers, the formulation of technical standards, and the promotion of ecological achievements.

Voting and Election: Direction Setting and Team Building

The assembly reviewed and approved theGCC High-Performance Computing Industry Development Group FirstAssembly Solution and theGCC High-Performance Computing Development Group Work Regulations, laying a solid foundation for the standardized operation of the HPC DG. The assembly then elected the first Management Committee, including the following members:

Chairman: Lin Xinhua, Deputy Director of Network Information Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Vice-chairmen: Fu Haohuan, Deputy Director of the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen; Tan Guangming, researcher of the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Zhang Hua, Vice President of Huawei Kunpeng Computing Product Line.

Members:Ren Jie, EDA Director of Hangzhou Semitronix Co., Ltd.; Tian Feng, Senior Vice President PERA Global Technology Co., Ltd.; Zhang Xudong, Director of the Supercomputing Center of National Engineering Research Center of CNPC Oil and Gas Exploration Software Co., Ltd., etc.

Member and Secretary General:Sun Yu, Executive Director of the Institute of Intelligent Pharmacy, China Pharmaceutical University.

After the voting, Academician Qian Depei and Secretary General Peng Peng granted the license to HPC DG and issued letters of appointment to the elected management committee members. HPC DG is now officially established and is committed to promoting the innovation and application of HPC technologies and the prosperity of the global computing ecosystem.

Key Tasks: Ecosystem Building, Industry Implementation, and International Cooperation

The key task discussion was hosted by Lin Xinhua, Chairman of the management committee. Guests discussed industry ecosystem building, technological breakthroughs, and international cooperation. Chairman Lin proposed four development directions: promoting industry consensus, building an open source ecosystem, promoting full-chain industry collaboration, and strengthening talent cultivation. Multiple committee members and representatives of member organizations gave suggestions, emphasized the need to accelerate the standardization of the tool chain, streamline the closed-loop management of production, education, research, and application, and work with international organizations to build an open ecosystem. Fu Haohuan from Shenzhen Supercomputing Center stated that the second phase of the supercomputing project will serve as the industry engine behind the deep integration of computing power and AI. Zhang Hua from Huawei proposed to introduce Arm ecosystem resources based on the global layout. Fan Chun, a university representative, called for strengthening talent cultivation and resource sharing.

The assembly set forth the missions of HPC DG, which include identifying industry needs, developing benchmark cases, and advancing international cooperation to help HPC empower various industries and inject new vitality into the global industry ecosystem.

Panel Discussion: Optimizing Industry Chains and Promoting the Global HPC Industry

The assembly also included a special panel with the theme of "Optimizing the Industry Chains and Promoting the Global HPC Industry." This panel was chaired by Sun Yu, the newly elected Secretary General of the HPC DG. Four speakers shared experience and plans on the implementation of HPC in different industries.

With the theme of "Earth System Model Development Supported by Hyper-Intelligence Fusion,"Fu Haohuan discussed the application prospect of supercomputing and intelligent computing in the Earth System Model, emphasizing the significance of computing power fusion for climate change research and disaster warning.
