On December 20, 2024, the Global Computing Consortium (GCC) Energy Saving and Decarbonization Special Interest Group (ESD SIG) was successfully established in Beijing. Over 30 representatives from universities and research institutes in the computing field, R&D and manufacturing enterprises, carriers, new home appliance vendors, and third-party testing and certification organizations attended the meeting.
At the meeting, representatives unanimously approved theWork Regulations of the ESD SIG, and elected the Management Committee. They also reviewed and approved the composition and work content of the group such as energy efficiency benchmarks, group standards, evaluation, and research. The ESD SIG has also set up an expert committee composed of renowned experts such as Academician Guan Xiaohong from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to assist in the strategic planning and systematic promotion of the group. Experts from China Academy of Standardization Technology (CAST), Huawei, and China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute were also invited to deliver thematic presentations on topics such as the progress of energy efficiency standardization of computing infrastructure, green transformation of ICT equipment, and application of green data center technologies.
The ESD SIG is a specialized technical institution established under the framework of the GCC to develop and maintain energy carbon benchmark assessment methods for computing infrastructure, developing standards for global groups related to digital energy saving and carbon reduction, and develop standardized solutions for green and low-carbon transformation in key industries. Its secretariat is located in the China National Institute of Standardization.
Looking ahead, the ESD SIG will focus on the trend of digitalization and green development, strengthen cooperation and exchanges among global parties, promote energy-saving and low-carbon development in the computing industry, and effectively leverage digital technologies to accelerate the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development as we march towards the carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals.
