On December 20, 2024, the establishment meeting of the Energy Saving And Decarbonization Special Interest Group of the Global Computing Consortium (GCC), hereinafter referred to as the Special Interest Groupor SIG,was successfully held in Beijing. More than 30 representatives from universities and research institutions in the computing field, R&D and manufacturing enterprises, operators, new home appliance manufacturers, third-party testing and certification institutions, and other organizations attended the meeting both online and offline.

At the meeting, representatives of member organizations reviewed and unanimously approved the Working Regulations of the GCC Energy Saving And Decarbonization Special Interest Group, elected the Management Committee, and reviewed and approved the composition and work content of working groups on energy efficiency benchmarks, group standards, evaluation research, and other areas. The SIG also established an Expert Committee composed of renowned experts including Academician Guan Xiaohong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in order to strengthen the SIGs strategic planning and systematic advancement.

The meeting also invited experts from the Resource and Environment Research Branch of the China National Institute of Standardization, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., and the Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology to deliver thematic reports on topics including the progress of energy efficiency standardization for computing infrastructure, information and communication equipment supporting green transformation, and the application of green data center technologies.

The SIG is a professional technical organization established under the framework of the Global Computing Consortium (GCC). It carries out work including the development and maintenance of energy and carbon benchmark evaluation methods for computing infrastructure, the development of international and domestic group standards related to digital energy saving and decarbonization, and the development of standardized solutions for green and low-carbon transformation in key industries. The Secretariat of the SIG is based at the China National Institute of Standardization.

Going forward, the SIG will closely follow the trend of coordinated development between digitalization and green transformation, widely engage relevant stakeholders at home and abroad, strengthen international cooperation and exchanges, promote energy saving and low-carbon development in the computing industry, and effectively leverage digital technologies as a key driving force in accelerating the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development, making greater contributions to achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
